Spied - 2017 New Volkswagen Passat TDi testing in India

The segment where the likes of the Toyota Camry Hydrid plays and brings rather great sales number, it was a matter of time other makers took notice. Skoda already has Superb that has always been a go to car for the people who like luxury of a proper executive sedan perfect for being chauffeured in. And only recently, Honda re-introduced the Accord in the country after a hiatus. Though, this time around the Accord has arrived in a Hybrid Avatar. Now, it seems, VW is too getting ready to bring in the new eight generation Passat in India and by the looks of it, it looks stunning and it has been spied testing in India by our friends at ThrustZone

The Passat has always been a striking car, though the seventh-generation was a bit too boxy and VW in its appearance. However, the new eight generation model looks much sleeker and the comparatively more curvaceous and beautiful design of the headlights is sure to be the best looking one in the segment.  The changes to the front, especially in the headlight cluster have lent the new Passat with much more premium air than the car it will replace. Though the new car is shorter than the older one, VW says that the rear occupant’s space has increased overall. In all, the eight generation Passat looks stunning and we can only imagine how the ‘CC’ variant will look.

For the interiors, the new Passat gets an elaborate list of new features such as a new 12.3 inch digital instrument cluster which has been sourced from the latest Audi TT and ups the premium quotient of the cars interiors. You will also get a smart Head-Up-Display tech and a much improved infotainment system. We reckon the new system will certainly have the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. VW says that the Passat has seen an increase of 26 liters in luggage space that now stands at 586 liters.

When launched, the VW Passat will be available in two petrol powered variants and single diesel engine option. The first petrol engine will be assembled here and is expected to be priced around INR 25-30 Lakhs. The second is the Plug-in-Hybrid GTE variant which will be a CBU model and would cost above Rs. 40 Lakhs price tag. The only diesel on the car is expected to be the 2.0-liter TDi powerhouse that is known for its more than ample performance, and is expected to be priced around Rs. 35 Lakhs. The Car is expected to launch in Feb. 2017.

On the specifications front the engines on the upcoming Passat have 170bhp and 350Nm for 2.0-liter TDi diesel engine. The 1.8-liter TFSI unit is capable of 180bhp and 320Nm while the GTE Plug-In-Hybrid has a 1.4-liter TFSI unit with a 9.9kWh electric motor. The battery pack for the electric motor is a Lithium-ion.  The GTE’s combined numbers are 218bhp and a staggering 400Nm of torque. As for transmission options, the car is set to get a 6-speed manual or a 7-Speed DSG automatic.
