Skoda entered the mid- size sedan market in November 2011 by introducing their Rapid sedan having an unparalleled built quality and easy handling. The new Rapid is comparatively more affordable than other existing Skoda models. Moreover, its easy drivability makes it a favorite amongst its rivals. Rapid is a C-segment sedan which comes from the same soapbox as the Volkswagen Vento. The new Skoda which was introduced by Skoda India in the last year is a hope to improve and increase the company’s sales and market domination. Slight changes have been made to the exterior and interior of the car but it’s the engine which is made more flamboyant. Skoda Rapid even comes in 6 alluring colors names as ; Brilliant Silver, Candy white, Cappuccino Beige, Deep Black Pearl, Flash Red and Toffee brown.
The Rapid measures 4386mm in length, 1699mm in width, 1466mm in height and has a monumental wheelbase of 2552mm. It provides a 168mm ground clearance. Though being about 2mm longer than the Vento, the Rapid is equal to it when compared to its overall height, width and wheelbase. The motor car has stretch back headlamps and a horizontal grille with single chrome lining which sprints over the body of the car. The A-pillar and the log hood of the car are joined by unconfined lines. The bumper is wide and the fog lights are lifted for better clarity. The new Skoda Rapid exterior has the Skoda logo on the front, rear and on the wheels. It also has the freshly styled 15 inch alloy wheels which fit the glaring wheel arches. The sedan is polished in black and chrome and has the latest projector headlamps. The exterior of the car is available in 6 new shades; Brilliant Silver, Candy White, Cappuccino beige, Deep Black pearl, Flash Red and the New Toffee Brown.
INTERIOR & FEATURE
The brown and beige color scheme which is the staple of Rapid is also featured by the New Vento. Cruise control and magnetic card holder are some new features equipped in the car. The new sedan has the iOS5 and android based phone application as a source of entertainment. The chrome inserts are also present in the interior door handles, centre console, gearshift indicator, air- conditioning vents and in the steering wheel. It also comes with and 2-DIN audio system with USB, AUX-in, SD/MMC card and Bluetooth. Bluetooth transmissions as well as the audio can be controlled by the customized steering wheel.
The petrol variant offers a mileage of 15kmpl. Whereas the 1498cc power diesel variant, provides the mileage of 21.15 kmpl.
A 1.6-litre MPI/DOHC petrol and a 1.5-litre TDI diesel are the two available engine options in the Rapid. 103bhp at 5250rpm is the top power output of the petrol engine and gives a peak torque of 153Nm at 3800rpm. The sedan has a 1.5-litre TDI unit oil burner which is a restrained version of the 1.6-litre turbocharged motor. The engine can produce 103bhp of power at 4400rpm and 250Nm of torque at 1500rpm. The petrol automatic has a six-speed gearbox as well as the oil burner gets a seven speed dual clutch automatic gearbox. Moreover a five-speed manual gearbox drives the power to front wheels for efficient drivability.
PERFORMANCE AND HANDLING
Skoda Rapid’s distinctive drivability and handling is what makes the car unique. It’s a smooth ride even on the potholes and operates the best on the highways. In order to prevent accidents, the steering is kept light on low speeds as well as it gets stiffer on high speeds for improved control. Both engines that are the 1-litre turbocharged diesel and the 1.6-litre petrol, execute just right efficiency on both mid and high-revs. The high-range is also classified as decent. The Rapid makes a run of 100kmph in just 11 to 12 seconds.
