Audi A3 Review
SYNOPSIS

Audi A3, a Sedan has 6 versions available in India. Audi A3 has 2 Petrol cars and 4 Diesel cars. It  comes in 13 colours, namely, Amalfi white , Beluga brown, Brilliant black, Brilliant red , Dakota grey, Daytona grey, Glacier white, Lotus grey, Misano red, pearl effect , Monsoon grey, Mythos black, Scuba blue, Shiraz red. Audi entered the Indian market after its two other German contemporaries had already entered. The events led to the company grabbing the top position according to the sales numbers. Audi was the only luxury car maker in the country with sale of almost 10000 units in a year. The company had a long line-up in its product portfolio, which had 3 SUVs. Incidentally, Audi A3 will be 12th model from the German manufacturer in India. Among the other sedans of the company are A4, A6, A7 as well as A8, which are already quite popular on the roads.

Outer Look

The A3 model from Audi comes with a moderate usage of chrome, instead of flooding it for a premium touch. The window sills and the front grille are the only areas where the chrome inserts have been utilised. Also, the small sedan retains the sporty nature of the car with the minimal usage of chrome inserts. The lines are clear and have a European touch. A3 has been characterised by two delicate lines along with a compact styling. The roofline has been reduced significantly even at the back. The tapering roofline has reduced the headroom for tall passengers. The build quality has a typical German touch because of the sturdiness. The doors in the front have three stages while opening while the rear doors have two stages. Incidentally, Audi has reduced the side skirting of the car to give an impression of a low-slung sedan. However, the smart aspect is that the ride height has been increased to save the car while driving Audi A3 on bad roads.

Interior & Feature

The first and foremost thing about the sedan is that is low slung with plush, comfortable interiors. Audi is characteristic of its superior quality finish along with imperial cabin quality. Soft plastic finish and leather interiors make it even more comfortable. The compact dimensions have made the cabin tighter and has led to space constraints. Lack of headroom, under-thigh space and space for knees has been reduced. The backrest is too upright and lacks the space for tall people. Black or beige upholstery have been provided as an option. However, black surpasses beige when it comes to aesthetics. The central console has been considerably changed in the new A3. Instead, the rotary knob is the single operating command centre. Technology has been improved by introducing a touch pad on the rotary knob, which is capable of identifying handwriting with accuracy. Toggle switches have been utilised for reducing the number of buttons. Plugging-in your own devices has become a child’s play with MDI specific cables.

Engine

The Indian version of the Audi A3 comes with a 1.8-litre TFSI petrol mill, which comes with a seven speed automatic gearbox. There is also another option for 2.0-litre TDI diesel mill, which comes with a six-speed automatic transmission system. However, the Indian car lovers have a disappointment in this case not having an AWD Quattro system even in the pipeline.

Mileage

The 1968 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 20.38 kmpl, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 16.6 kmpl, respectively.

Performance and Handling

The drivability of the Audi A3 inside the city is exceptional. There is no lag, which means the machine responds promptly enough to deal with the city traffic conditions. Refinement is top notch at higher speeds, where you do not even hear the purr of the engine. The engine is super responsive and the system amazes the way it picks up. The DSG has smaller shifts comparatively to maximise the fuel efficiency. You might feel surprised to see the car reaching top gears at speeds as low as 60 kilometres per hour.

Rivalry

Audi A3 against its usual competitors, BMW 1 Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
