The Audi A6 that entered its seventh-generation in 2012, is one of the best-selling Audi cars in India. Available in three trims - Premium, Premium Plus and Technology - the new-gen A6 has taken its design inspiration from the A8 sedan. Though, it shares several components with the A7 Sportback as well. The new-gen Audi A6 is lighter, more feature-rich, and a much improved product than its predecessor. The saloon is brought via CKD route, and then assembled at the company’s Aurangabad facility.
The new version of the saloon received some major cosmetic updates, but retained the original DNA. It features a high-gloss black single frame grille, a long bonnet, new headlights with Xenon Plus and adaptive lighting, sweeping roof, headlights integrated fog lights and turn indicators, day time running light, 17-inches alloys, short overhangs, integrated boot spoiler, rear bumper with an exhaust pipe and trapezoidal LED tail lights. It measures 4915mm in length, 1874mm in width and 1455mm in height. The new A6 is shorter and lower than before, but has a longer wheelbase.
Interior & Features
Sporting a dashboard with wooden inserts, dark tan Valcona leather seat upholstery, door sills with aluminium inlays and other fine detailing, the interior of the new A6 looks as premium as its exterior. The material quality, fit and finish are superb. It’s quite spacious and comfortable from inside. The A6 borrows several components with the A7 as well. Features on offer are BOSE sound system with Bluetooth connectivity, 20GB hard drive support, DVD changer, instrument cluster with multiple displays and functions, MMI system with 6.5-inches screen, automatic air conditioning unit etc.
The Audi A6 is available in both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol variant is powered by a 1984cc, 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder TFSI engine that churns out a maximum power of 177bhp at 4, 000rpm - 6, 000rpm and 320Nm of peak torque at 1, 500rpm - 3, 900rpm. The diesel model, on the other hand, is propelled by a 1968cc, 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder unit that develops 174bhp at 3, 750rpm - 4, 200rpm and 380Nm at 1, 750rpm - 2, 500rpm. Both the engines are mated to an 8-speed Multitronic automatic transmission. The performance version of the saloon - S6 - drives its power from a 4.0-litre V8 TFSI Quattro petrol engine, which is good for 424bhp and 550Nm. This engine is paired with a 7-speed S tronic gearbox.
The 1968 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 18.53 kmpl, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 15.26 kmpl, respectively.
Performance and Handling
All the three engines of A6 are highly refined, and deliver strong performance. The saloon is easy to drive in city traffic and highways. The new model is 80kgs lighter yet stiffer than the previous model, thanks to its aluminium hybrid body-built and lots of aluminium components. It gets Audi drive select modes - Comfort, Sport, Dynamic and Individual. The adaptive air suspension absorbs most of its potholes and bumps on rough roads, and offers extremely comfortable ride. The electro-mechanical steering wheel weighs just right. The lightweight body-built, stiff chassis and agile suspension setup aid to handling and drivability of the car. The NVH levels are well-controlled, too.
