Mahindra Scorpio Review
Synopsis Mahindra Scorpio, a SUV has 7 Diesel versions available in India. It features in 4 exotic colours, namely, Diamond White, Fiery Black, Molten Red and Regal Blue. Introduced in 2002, Mahindra Scorpio has always been appreciated for its rugged looks, commanding road presence and off-road capabilities. The Scorpio is one of the top-selling Mahindra roadsters in India. It received major updates and a new engine in 2006, followed by a facelift in 2008. In 2014, the company launched the new-generation model of the car that received quite an overwhelming response. The new model got furnished with a more rugged and strapping look than its predecessor with innovative features to elevate its performance and comfort.

Outer Look

The model received evident front and rear updates and modified panels to give it a more puissant and vigorous look than its predecessor. The front end features a new pair of projector headlights with LED Daytime running lights, a new radiator grille and renovated bumper. The side and rear profiles flaunt body coloured door handles and a new roof rail, and a new rear spoiler with revamped LED tail-lamps, respectively.

Interior & features
The interiors were worked upon virtuously to escalate grandeur and lavish feel of the car.
The seats frames remain same but are more cushioned and firm to provide more comfort. Other comfort-enhancing prominent features include a new steering wheel with audio control buttons, 2-DIN music system, a touchscreen infotainment system, a new instrument cluster, rear wiper and defogger, horizontally-stacked AC vents, sliding seats for the middle row and remote central locking. Features like GPS navigation, Voice assist system, a 6-inches touch screen infotainment system with CD, DVD, Bluetooth, USB and Aux connectivity, Intellipark and rain & light sensors are available only in the top-end model.

Engine
The new model is available in the same diesel powertrain options - a 2.2-litre mHawK and a 2.5-litre m2DiCR. The 2.2-litre, mHawk engine churns out a maximum power of 120bhp with a peak torque of 280Nm while the 2.5-litre, m2Di engine efficiently generates the value of 74bhp and 200Nm respectively. Both the engines are coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission. The SUV is among the most fuel efficient Mahindra cars in India returning a maximum mileage of 15.4kmpl.

Mileage
The 2179 cc and 2523 cc Diesel - powered variant offers a fuel economy of 12.6 kmpl and 16.1 kmpl respectively.

Performance & Handling
Both the engines are more distinguished, effective and forceful (mid-range) than before. It requires less gear shifting, and offers remarkable drivability. Ride quality is improvised making the handling balanced and wieldy. However, it may get bouncy and a bit troublesome on rough roads. The lighter suspension and wider track contribute to its high speed stability. Also, the body roll is immensely reduced in the new version.

Rivalry
Mahindra Scorpio faces tussle with the Renault Duster. The Scorpio offers decent off-road fuel economy, while the latter delivers an impressive city mileage. The Duster is available in both petrol and diesel engine options, while Mahindra’s Scorpio is offered only in diesel version. Mahindra’s SUV is more spacious and practical than the Duster yet Duster takes a lead on the front of its interior, comfort and exterior designing.

Pros
Robust body
Efficient and frugal diesel engine
4x4 available on base variant, too
High resale value

Cons
Ride quality still gets bouncy
2nd-row legroom
Fit and finish quality
No automatic transmission
