Maruti Suzuki India launched the second generation Alto K10 on November 3 2014 and since then it has sold more than 25,00,000 lakh units in India.
Outlook & Exteriors
The changes made to this car are very subtle and hence, it is pretty easy to distinguish the Alto K10 from its cheaper sibling. From the front, the hatchback features large swept-back headlamps and a completely new bonnet that adds muscularity to its overall layout. The air dam is trapezoidal and while housing the license plate, sits comfortably between the two round fog lamps.
Move to the side and the sharp aerodynamic lines running the length of the car become more visible. A single character line connecting the front fenders with the tail lights add a little drama to the otherwise simple facade of the car.
The rear of this vehicle has also seen cosmetic enhancements as the tailgate of this car is new and flatter than before, making the car appear wider. The boot-lid is small, so is the rear windshield, but the car extends a decent boot capacity of 177 liters.
The car measures 3545mm in length, 1295mm in width, 1475mm in height and has a ground clearance of 160mm.
Interior, Features & Ambience
Step inside the Alto K10 and the difference between both the siblings becomes evident. Though still a bit inferior to the cabin of Hyundai Eon, the in-house of this entry level hatchback is a bit upmarket for its segment. There is the contemporary dual-tone dashboard, wider AC vents, a new steering wheel and a music system (with CD, MP3 player, USB and AUX) in piano black finish making the point. The interior also has splashes of silver accents all around it.
The hatchback has front seats that offer decent amount of under-thigh support, leg and headroom. The backrest is a bit compromised as the seats are scooped up from behind to increase legroom for the rear passengers. As for the rear seats, the added legroom is a benefit, however the shoulder room is insufficientmaking the sitting arrangement of three people in the back seat a cramped affair.
Engine & Performance
The Alto K10 is only available in a 1.0-litre (998cc) 3 cylinder engine with an option of CNG in both the LXi and VXi trims. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission while the higher VXi variant is available with an automated gearbox. This engine churns out 68hp @ 6000rpm and has a peak torque of 90Nm @3500rpm. It extends a claimed mileage of around 24.07kmpl. For its size and segment, the Alto K10 is pretty fast as it has a top speed of 142kmph and can achieve 0-100kms in just 15.49 seconds.
Get your right leg heavy and you will realize that the throttle response of this engine is crispier than before. You are not left asking for more as thiscar glides fast in the first three gears very easily. The petrol engine would suffice your city drivability as well as satisfy the auto enthusiast in you.
Ride Quality and Handling
After taking the test drive of the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 it is certain that the hatchback houses an engine that is peppy and very responsive.
The automatic variant of this car is much smoother than the automatic of the Maruti Suzuki Celerio. It is more refined and the jerkiness that was felt in the latter model is minimized in the Alto K10. The NVH levels (Noise, Vibration & Harshness) are efficiently controlled making the cabin quiet and comfortable to ride in.
However, the slim tires measuring 155/55 R13 rattle the car easily. The McPherson Strut suspension in the front tires and the 3-link rigid axle suspension well absorb the small potholes and cracks of the road but at high speeds, they are bound to disturb the occupants of the car.
Braking and Safety
The car has ventilated disc brakes in the front tires and drum breaks in the back tires. ABS and an optional driver airbag in the top VXi variant add to the safety list of the car.
If not in the world, Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 is the cheapest automatic in India. It features a substantial upgrade over the Alto 800. It has a peppy and rev-happy automatic engine that is the mostfun to drive in its segment especially in the traffic.
