After the SX4 that Ciaz has replaced, it looks a big step-up in the segment. Think of a Honda City and a maruti SX4, the comparison looks little awkward as the design proportion in identically very different. Now replace the SX4 with the Ciaz and now City will face some competition, a tough one indeed!
Outlook and Exterior
The Ciaz is definitely a handsome looking car, especially to the one it succeeds. With a ground clearance of 170mm it do not have as much a high stance as SX4, still it looks ample to deal with those bumpy and scratched sections and a slight tight ground clearance has also helped in enhancing the handling of the car.
The design of the car is sleek and stretched. The face looks urban housing projector beams and a slated grille with sleek chrome highlights. Moreover, the face looks simple yet elegant as there is not much detailing on the hood and even lower part of the overhang does not have much profile line.
Moving to the side, Ciaz looks long and royal. The side profile gives you a good sense of space inside and brings in the feel of a luxury sedan in its dimensions. Moreover, the front wheel arches are flow out that adds some muscles in the design and the character that connects the wheel arches to the rear haunches does brings some sharpness.
Walking to the rear, the aesthetics of the design language looks even more prominent as the bend of the c-pillar indorses a tweak of coupe like design and the high positioning of the boot with those sharp looking tail-lamps mates well to the design.
Interior, Features & Ambiance
Once you open the door, the first thing that will astonish you is the space inside, have to say that Maruti guys have worked really effectively in utilizing every single inch of that 2650mm wheelbase as there is more than ample amount of room at the rear that will allow you to sit with legs folded. The rear seat too is good in under-thigh support though the cushioning of the seat can be a little softer. Having said that, the middle passenger at rear will face little difficulty due to pushed back rear air-con vents, but the seat is wide enough for three. Even the front seats of the Ciaz are broad and well cushioned that makes long journey comfortable.
The design of the interior looks aesthetic too. Beige & black color theme looks nice though the contrast of the beige treatment can be little de-toned to make it look more niche. Fit & finish of the switch knobs are impressive too and the dash looks uncluttered. The doors of the Ciaz has also been designed with ergonomics in concern which is reflective in the positioning of door armrest and center armrest. Six footers can feel the pain in getting in though.
Moreover, the car is feature rich as it has all the segment standard features like keyless entry, height adjustable seat and steering, all door power windows, front and rear armrest and so on. But what you get in addition is the features like engine start-stop, rear A/C vent and a smart infotainment system with connectivity options like apple car play, mirror link, Bluetooth, USB and Aux-in.
Engine and performance
Well it’s not something that we would call athletic but definitely it has enough agility for your commuting purpose. The Petrol Ciaz is powered by a 1.4-Liter, 4-Cylinder VVT petrol engine that churns out a 92.2 HP and 130 Nm of peak torque. It delivers a fuel economy of 20.70 km/l in manual transmission, while when mated to an Auto gearbox, it delivers about 19.12 km/l. This engine feels sluggish at low speeds as the torque figures aren’t that impressive but once it sets on the pace, it has enough grunts to make you feel agile. In the nutshell, it feels very pleasant to cruise on the highways and offers enough confidence for those overtake gestures. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, while a 4-speed automatic is also on
Next is the 1.3-Liter DDis 200 diesel mill that performs duty in most of the Maruti cars. This engine propels 90hp and a goo 200 Nm of torque. Alike other models, it is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and even here it brings smile on our pace as it goes over 1750 rpm. The peppiness of the engine is pretty much alive under the skin of the Ciaz too.
Ride and handling
Impressive and Maruti really seems to have taken concrete steps in marking the improvement. We personally like the suspension tuning of the Ciaz as it provides a good combination of comfort and drivability. I was actually able to take the corners just along the edge marking and I was left surprised with the way Ciaz managed it and that too without much body rolls. What still I would have loved is a slight more feedback from the steering wheel.
Overall, ride quality of Ciaz is supple and what will further impress you is the cabin insulation as I would be not wrong in saying that it kinda shuts the world outside.
Braking and Safety
Ciaz has disc brakes up-front and drums at rear. Moreover, it has dual front airbags and ABS for safety purpose.
First, I look on Ciaz as a successful successor of the SX4 and definitely one. It serves well for both purposes like, business commute and as a family car. And this makes the Ciaz a sensible buy.
