Maruti calls it Love Utility Vehicle (LUV) and only people at Maruti know what that means. However, to us the Ertiga looks a practical utility vehicle and yes! Maruti has managed to utilize every inch available inside to bring a sense of space that is not that predictable, standing out of the car. Based on extended swift platform, Ertiga feels very convenient to drive without giving you the feel of that little extra bulge it carries.
Outlook & Exterior
The recent facelift given to the Ertiga has merely added some bold chrome embellishment to the profile and to be honest, the one on the face looks little weird.
Well! The face of the car has been tweaked and what it gets is more stretched back headlamps, a wide, and chrome grille that adjoins both the headlamps and a tweaked bumper that now has a broad fog-lamp area with hints of silver treatment thrown in.
Move to the side and the design is very MPV type, plain and simple that looks inspired from a station wagon. You will barely notice any detailing on the side, just that the fender has some muscles flowing. Still we cannot call it sculpted. One thing that anyone will surely doubt looking at the side is on the space inside as standing out it does not look ample for seven.
Now the back of the car too substantiates the MPV tag as it looks that way. Nothing much is new here except the sleek chrome line that replaces the previous body colored boot door handle.
Talking about its dimensions, Ertiga is 4265 mm in length and is 1695 mm wide. It stands 1685 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2740 mm.
Interior, Features & Ambiance
Flexible and very wisely designed. Inside the Ertiga will impress you with the amount of space it provides, which just cannot be speculated standing outside. Having said that, there is nothing to yell about, its just that seven passengers can fit-in with reasonable ease. What actually impress much is that the second row can be adjusted to provide some added space to the 3rd row passengers. Moreover, the seats both at front and in the 2nd row are comfortable and the second row seats provide decent under-thigh support too. What adds to the impression is that even with 2nd row seats being pushed all the way forward, your knees won’t touch the front seats. The 3rd row too feels comfortable for kids or adults who are not touching the roof with their head. But that said, it is not a place for six footers as they can only manage small distance tours, being at the rear. However, the low positioning of the floor helps by providing little under-thigh support.
The layout of the interior too looks decent. The design of the dashboard is very much similar to the current generation Swift Dzire and the all beige color theme is a nice touch but at the same time also looks little flimsy and eye pinching with its tone. The cabin also is practical with all doors having a bottle storage area and a good number of utility spaces to hold knick-knacks and other stuffs. Ertiga also offers a decent trunk volume of 185-liter with all seats in duty, while it can be further extended up to a whole 735-liters.
Moreover, Maruti Suzuk Ertiga features are also impressive. Though there is nothing extra-ordinary added but it does has all the segment standard features such as Auto climate control, 2-Din audio system with Bluetooth, USB and Aux connectivity options, Powered ORVMs, Steering mounted audio control, Keyless entry and most important, rear A/C vents.
Engine and Performance
The engines that perform duty for Ertiga are the same engines that are also found in other cars. Ertiga Specifications are somewhat similar to that of the Ciaz.
The petrol engine is a 1.4-Liter 4-Cylinder engine that produces 92hp and 130 Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and also has a 4-speed automatic on offer. This engine does not perform in a very sporty or peppy manner in Ertiga but it does not let the car feel under-power. There is a surge of power felt at 1500 rpm which goes till 2750 rpm and thereafter it again picks from 3000 rpm. There is just little power-lag felt at between 2750 – 3000 rpm after which the car remains in the power band till 4200 rpm. This Engine delivers a decent fuel economy of 16.02 km/l.
Next is the prominent 1.3-Liter 4-Cylinder DDis 200 diesel engine that powers almost all the diesel cars of Maruti Suzuki. Recently Maruti has added an electric motor to this engine with the main purpose to improve efficiency and to control emission levels. So the diesel Ertiga is now hybrid with SHVS technology. This engine churns out 90hp and 200Nm of peak torque and is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. This engine even in Ertiga has that usual bee genesis that brings smile every time you rev it over 1750 rpm. Said that, in between the rev range this engine has quite a number of lag, but then that’s the only problem it has.
Ride and Handling
After taking the 1st test drive of the Ertiga we found that it has a supple ride quality that will allow you to drive in calm. I personally enjoy cruising in Ertiga on the highways and especially on those small trips where you have to return the same day. The power delivery in both the engines is so linear and swift that you won’t feel like rushing. That being said, when you will want to, it will not pull you back. The cabin is well insulated too and only minor of that road rumbles filter inside and that too at high speeds.
The steering of the Ertiga somewhat lacks in feedback but gains required weight while gaining speed. The real pleasure in Ertiga is that though it carries little extra bulge, but it is just not felt being behind the wheels. Suspensions of this car are tuned towards comfort, though has enough stiffness to carry the mass along corners, restricting much body rolls. The only thing to be cautious is that the Ertiga does over-steers at high speed.
Braking and Safety
To bite the speed, Ertiga has disc brakes up-front and drums at rear with ABS. It also has dual airbags for front passengers.
I look at it as a very capable car for a small family where children have the fortune to live along with their grandparents. Moreover, Maruti has managed to make a perfect balance of practicality, size and drivability in Ertiga.
