Premier Rio, a SUV has 2 petrol variants and 2 diesel versions available in India and is out on roads in 4 colours, namely, Cherry Red, Mystic Black, Paradise White and Sterling Silver. Premier Ltd is an automobile manufacturing company located in Mumbai and owned by the Walchand Group. It introduced Rio in the year 2009 to give stiff competition to the other prevailing players in the SUV segment. Rio is a compact-sized five-seater SUV with eminent features of a hatchback.
The model is facelifted with innovative embellishments, its modernistic headlights and an exclusively designed bumper which though is bit oversized as compared to the hood and body of the car. The side opening tailgate and a spare wheel mounted on the boot imparts a traditional look to the rear of the SUV. The hinge of the tail gate is neatly covered with a metal sheet and the vertical taillights provide a pert and compact touch to the SUV.
Interior & Features
The interiors of the car are endowed with quality material and features comfortable seating with ample leg room. A music system with four speakers, meter panel and a decent AC control system elevate the charm of the dashboard. But the music system lacks USB connectivity option. Absence of a good finishing touch on the dashboard is demonstrated by empty panels in the front. The front windows are powered while the rear ones are winders. The rear seats are easily foldable creating a sizeable space in the back of the car.
The model is available in four different variants. The petrol versions (Gx and GLx) are endowed with a 1.3 litre Multi-point fuel injection (MPFI) engine that has a displacement of 1173 cc generating a maximum power of 56.3 kW and maximum torque of 103.9 Nm. The Lx Diesel turbo engine has a displacement of 1489 cc and generates maximum power of 47.6 kW and maximum torque of 152 Nm. The CRDi4 Diesel engine of Dx model has displacement of 1248 cc and it generates maximum power of 53 kW and maximum torque of 183 Nm. The five speed manual transmission system is standard for all the variants.
The 1489 cc Diesel - powered variant offers a fuel economy of 23.75 kmpl , while the Petrol variant produces a mileage of 14.1 kmpl.
Performance and Handling
The performance of the model is not up to the mark with other SUVs in the market.
With a top speed of 145 Km/h and fuel economy of 12.5 km for Petrol and 23.75 km for Diesel, Rio does not create a good impression in the market. It is its power steering which ensures easy driving, and more importantly, the 200 mm ground clearance which elevates its performance level. This ground clearance allows the roadster to offer a smooth riding experience to the driver and the passengers even through potholes. The McPherson strut & coil spring in the front and 5 rods system in the back of the suspension system provides wieldy handling and driving of the wagon.
Although Premier Rio is one of the most affordable SUVs in India yet faces stiff competition from Mahindra Thar, Ford Ecosport, Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano.
The above mentioned cars are loaded with more eminent features when compared to Premier Rio but lack its low price range.
